Call for Veterans & Military Connected Artists: In Alamogordo, Otero Arts will hold its “Second Annual Otero Veteran Arts Showcase” (OVAS) in June at the Otero Artspace, 1118 Indiana Ave., Alamogordo. OVAS will feature a month-long art exhibition, performances and writing workshops all featuring Veterans and Military connected artists. Deadline for entering is May 1. SILVER CITY
- RA@W Gallery in Silver City opened on March 23. Four local artists opened the gallery: Tasha Marshe, Amy McBroom and Kathryn Schmid from Silver City; and Ismelda Garza from Deming. All artists are contemporary in nature and the gallery is collective in practice. All pieces are in their original states of paper or canvas and hung salon style on wires. All four were at Western New Mexico University enrolled at the same time in similar painting and drawing classes within the fine arts. RA@w Gallery is for artists seeking exposure within Silver City in a quaint venue at 104 Yankie Street. - The Silver City Art Association hosts a First Friday gallery walk on April 5 in the Historic District of downtown Silver City. Galleries and their business friends will be open from 5-7 p.m. for receptions, art talks and other art events, with several galleries featuring artists on site to discuss their work. - Light Art Space, 209 W. Broadway in Silver City, Commemorating the Gila Wilderness 100 anniversary, Light art Space features “Four Artists Celebrating Wilderness,” an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Jane Seavers, Fred Barraza, Gay Scheibl and Paul Hotvedt. These four Silver City artists interpret the wilderness in their work. Curated by Paul Hotvedt. “Inspirations From the Wild”is an exhibition of photography and clay works by Karen Hymer and Zoe Wolfe. ALAMOGORDO
- Otero Arts features the second annual “Student Art Exhibit” at the Artspace located at 1118 Indiana Ave. in Alamogordo. The artwork spans k- 12 grades and includes various media including pottery, sculpture, drawing and painting. The exhibition opens with a reception 5-7 p.m. on April 5. DEMING
- April 2024 at the Deming Art Center features the Deming High School art students. The exhibit will be up from April 3 - 29. There will be a time to meet the artists, 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, April 7. Also, the month of April will bring the Guatemalan Mercado back for two days – 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, April 5 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, April 6. The Deming Art Center is at 100 S. TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES
- RioBravoFineArt, 110 North Broadway in Truth or Consequences, presents a combined artists show by two New Mexican artists, Nolan Winkler and Raul Dorn. The show runs through April 21. For this joint show, Winkler has chosen the title of “The Dance Begins” for her pieces. This show for combined artists is an opportunity to compare the styles of two different artists while gaining an enhanced understanding of the distinctive characteristics of each one. - Artist Joan Malkerson, known for paintings, ceramics, sculpture and installations, is set to unveil a solo art show centered around the theme of seeds. The exhibition, titled “The Seed Woman,” showcases a diverse collection of artworks that delve into the aesthetic and profound significance of seeds in our world. There will be an opening reception 5-7 p.m., Saturday, March 2. MAGDALENA
- Danielle Rae Miller’s ink on vellum drawings are featured at kind of a small array, 106 N. Main in Magdalena. Miller’s drawings layer density on transparency to reveal inter-species juxtapositions in bilaterally symmetrical arrangements suggestive of ritual. The artist’s hand is evident in the careful overlay of images, which are arranged as if to be read by creature code. Info: kindofasmallarray.com.
LAS CRUCES
- The Artist INC Express workshop is coming to Las Cruces on April 6 and 7, Hosted by the Doña Ana Arts Council, this free workshop helps artists, of any discipline, develop the building
blocks for a thriving and enduring arts practice. Led by a team of experienced, working artists, this 10-hour, hands-on workshop helps artists address specific needs and challenges they face throughout their careers. Through discussions, activities, and hands-on exercises, artist-peer-facilitators, and a new network of peer artists, participating artists are supported in setting goals for their practices, writing about their work, and building a personal brand.

- Gallery 925 presents Jan Archey, potter with “Ninety-Nine Bottles on the Wall and Other Vistas Seen.” This is a show of bottles, 99 of them, and wall pieces of images seen on various travels since the pandemic. Archey enjoys many firing techniques, and this show will have examples of woodfired ceramics, high fire stoneware, raku and saggar fired work as well as her wall pieces exhibiting unique surfaces achieved from using minerals from the Earth as her colorants. - Agave Artists Gallery features Paul Maxwell, a long-time member of the gallery in Mesilla as April artist of the month. As a painter, he focuses on the raw beauty of the desert southwest landscapes through watercolor, acrylic, or oil paintings. His art appears in other galleries and venues in New Mexico, Texas, and, sometimes, internationally, showing exotic views from Asia or Europe. Maxwell’s work tells stories of the world around him - people and animals alike. From 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 20 Maxwell will offer a painting demonstration at the Gallery. He’s offering a 20 percent discount on a 10” x 14” acrylic pet portrait for anyone who attends and brings a photo of their pet. - The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery, 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe, across from the historic Fountain Theatre features two local artists for the month of April: Bonnie MacQuarrie and Arlene Tugel. MacQuarrie specializes in art tile. She said her work is influenced by Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse. Tugel likes the pure, glowing color that can be achieved with watercolor, her preferred medium.
