As I reviewed Chapter 3 from the book “Unpacking Silver City” for this month’s historical excerpt, I was again reminded how a good story carries the narrative and personalizes the experience we have as we consume content.
The story of Sinovia Ray, as shared in that chapter and emphasized when I chatted with the historian, Javier Marrufo, who penned it, is just such an account. This week, her story became the thesis around which I based my Desert Exposure story. The reminder to remember Sinovia Ray is a call to all of us to learn from the experiences of others while also being entertained by those stories.
I think you’ll enjoy the look at Chihuahua Hill, taken from the oral history project that was a passion for Marrufo and that led to Chapter 3.
As you’re doing so, think about the people you know and the places to which you’ve been. We want to share the stories of people and places from all corners of southern New Mexico. Please send your story ideas my way and we’ll get to as many of them as we can. Desert Exposure is your magazine, focuses on the arts, the people, and the history of Silver City and beyond. You can reach me by email at kurt@lascrucesbulletin.com.
Thanks for reading the June issue of Desert Exposure.
Hope you enjoy it.
