Reception July 3, 5-7 p.m.

Light Dreams, juried exhibition of alternative/historical photographic processes, July 2-Sept. 6. Reception July 3, 5-7 p.m.

Tides and Currents: a photographic installation by Karen Hymer.

Karen Hymer, a Silver City artist and owner of Light Art Space gallery, is featured in the Flash Gallery from July 2 through August 22. Tides and Currents is a photographic installation featuring images from the Galapagos Islands, presented on handmade paper, silk, and through projection. The ocean has long served as an ancient symbol of the unconscious. As a metaphor, tides and currents frame emotional shifts, life transitions, and the timing of opportunities. This installation invites viewers to contemplate humanity’s relationship with the earth and with animals, past and present.

In the North Gallery, we present Light Dreams, a juried exhibition of alternative/historical photographic processes. Juror Jill Enfield, a fine art photographer and author from New York, chose 33 works by 19 artists from across the country.

Light Dreams invites artists to explore light not only as a physical phenomenon, but as an internal, psychological, and symbolic presence. The pairing of light and dreams suggests a space where conscious perception and subconscious experience overlap — where memory, imagination, and emotion shape how light is seen, felt, and interpreted.

Congratulations to the accepted artists: Paul Adams, Hallie Allred, Mohan Bhasker, Lisa Cohen, Sandi Daniel, Rick Finn, Steve Goff, Cynthia Hurayt, Ayumi Ishii, Trevor Jackson, Kathleen Koopman, Marek Matusz, Ginger Owen Murakami, Brendan Quirk, Ton Schless, Dennis Segers, Mark Timpany, Jalyn Turner, and Nathan Allen Wilkinson.

Dear Democracy/Dear America

July 1-Aug. 15

Opening reception July 3, 5-8 p.m.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, The Mad Hatter Gallery announces the opening of “Dear Democracy / Dear America,” a thought-provoking multi-disciplinary art exhibit.

Inspired by media theorist Marshall McLuhan’s observation that art functions as a “distant early warning system,” participating artists were asked “If democracy were a relationship, what kind of greeting card would they send?”
Would it be a birthday card celebrating the founding of the United States?  A condolence card mourning what feels lost? A “Get Well Soon” card offering hope for a speedy recovery? Or perhaps a “Dear John” card expressing disappointment, or disillusionment?
For more information about the gallery, contact Penny Peace at 575-528-9297 or Themadhattergallery@gmail.com

Young at Heart Chorus

Young at Heart Chorus Needs a Pianist

The Young at Heart Chorus, a group of senior singers that performs at Las Cruces senior homes, needs a pianist to provide accompaniment. The group sings eight months of the year, taking off in summer and January.

They rehearse on two Mondays and perform on four Thursdays each month, with all events at 2 p.m. It’s a volunteer position; with the joy you bring to the senior residents we sing to as the best recompense.

The music is familiar, with “real” melodies and there are no formal voice parts, so it’s a fairly easy commitment. If you or someone you know might be interested, contact Ray Scroggins via call or text at 262-490-7968 or email at rscrogginsnm@gmail.com.
