State Highway 152 (Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway) closed

Cracks in pavement indicate potential for road surface failure

Posted

The New Mexico Department of Transportation has closed New Mexico Highway 152, the Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway due to potential roadway failure. Large cracks in the asphalt were discovered that could lead to further deterioration. Highway department crews are evaluating conditions on scene and will lift the closure when the roadway is deemed safe.

A number of the Gila National Forest’s developed recreation facilities and trailheads are located along the closed stretch of highway and are therefore not accessible to the public for the duration of the closure. These sites include Iron Creek, Railroad Canyon, Upper Gallinas and Lower Gallinas campgrounds, Wrights Cabin Picnic Area, Emory Pass Vista, and trailheads for Gallinas Canyon, Railroad Canyon, Black Range Crest at Emory Pass, and Scenic #796 trails.

The closure extends from milepost 15 near the town of San Lorenzo, New Mexico to milepost 40, near Kingston, New Mexico. Travelers are advised to use Interstate 25 and New Mexico Highway 26, (Hatch Highway) to avoid the closed section of road.
