The New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo re-opens on Friday, May 7, on National Space Day. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Admission fees will be temporarily reduced to $5 per person, because of ongoing renovations and other projects. Capacity will also be limited.

The newly renovated “Human Spaceflight Gallery” opens for the first time. Located on the museum’s third floor, showcases suits and equipment used for the world’s first excursions to space. A majority of the exhibits will be open.

Several never-before-seen artifacts are featured on display from the museum’s archives. These include two of particular interest to New Mexico – the Omega Chronograph watch worn by New Mexican Jack Schmitt during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 and the EKG that John Glenn took at the Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque before becoming one of America’s first astronauts in 1960.

The International Space Hall of Fame Gift Shop inside the museum also re-opens on May 7. The Space Hall Gift Shop inside White Sands Mall continues to operate at that location.

Reduced capacity may result in a wait to get inside the museum. Visitors will be required to wear a mask.
