The Gadsden Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) of Las Cruces presented the new Gadsden Chapter Medal to Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) student Shaha Aziz.

It is a new medal from the SAR Gadsden Chapter, said chapter President Don Williams. It was created to honor personnel who show an exceptional act/response or thoughtfulness that reflects “patriotism, Americanism, humanity, respect, dignity for the uniqueness of each individual spirit,” Williams said.

Aziz recently noticed a man on a highway overpass appearing to be in emotional distress. She stopped her car at the edge of the road and attempted to talk to the man. Eventually gaining the man’s trust, she provided her phone so that the man could call a relative. With more assurances on her part, Aziz was able to call the Las Cruces Police Department.  A crisis intervention team was dispatched and the man was transported to Memorial Medical Center for evaluation.

“Not yet a doctor, Shaha Aziz has already saved a life,” Williams said.
