Silver City author in Las Cruces for book talk

Posted

Kris Neri is no stranger to the New Mexico book scene and she's coming to do a book talk at 1:30 p.m.,  on Oct. 4 when the Friends of the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library will present the award winning author.

During her talk at TBML she will share her personal tales from being a touring author and she will read from "Hopscotch Life" which has been characterized as an utterly charming contemporary fairy tale for adults.

She will be selling and signing copies of her books.

“Hopscotch Life,” features offbeat protagonist Plum Tardy, as an accept yourself in all your glory novel. In Hopscotch Life, Plum’s life reads more like a country song: After she loses her job, her home, and her man, she sets off in hopscotch fashion to find a new home and a new man. But even Plum could not have predicted the way trouble would find her, and the way her past would collide with her present. Will her offbeat approach save her, or land her in behind bars in hopscotch hell?

The most enjoyable part of the writing of Hopscotch Life, Neri said, was coming up with the way Plum mis-quotes proverbs, something she learned from her mother. Such as, “A woked pot never boils,” or “You’re like ships passing on the Nile. Capturing those unique aspects of a character really brings her to life.”

Former Silver City Poet Laureate, Beate Sigriddaughter, describes “Hopscotch Life” as: “…an utterly charming contemporary fairy tale for adults. If you've ever faced the homely monster of self-doubt, you’ll gladly worry about and cheer for good-natured protagonist Plum Tardy on her quirky quest for self-belief.”

Neri is no stranger to the New Mexico book scene. Her mystery novel, “Revenge on Route 66,”  features the daughter of eccentric Hollywood stars, and was a New Mexico-Arizona Book Award finalist. And her recent fantasy novel, “Magical Alienation,” which features a questionable psychic who teams up with a contemporary goddess/FBI agent, was a New Mexico-Arizona Book Award winner.

“I love working with other writers, especially newer ones,” she said. “I love passing along what others were generous enough to teach me.”

“Hopscotch Life” and Neri’s other novels are available from online sellers.
