As many as 15 animals died in a structure fire in Chamberino on Saturday, June 7.
Doña Ana Fire Rescue received a call to dispatch to a structure fire in the 300 block of San Benito Street in Chamberino at about 2 p.m. on June 7.
Crews found a single-wide mobile home on fire. After confirming that all occupants were out of the building, they learned that several animals were still inside.
Crews attempted to rescue the animals but found 15 deceased animals, according to a news release.
Ariana Parra, spokesperson for the county, said she did not have specific details on what types of animals died in the fire. She said that according to county ordinance, a person is allowed up to 15 dogs, cats or any combination thereof but only with a permit. Without a permit, only six are allowed, Parra said.
No other occupants were inside the home and no other injuries were reported.
Crews were later called back to the residence due to reports of smoke. Crews responded and found the smoke was residual steam and there were no remaining hotspots.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
