Las Cruces native Orlando Madrid has two free live performances coming up at Amador Live, 302 S. Main St.

The first show, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, will feature Madrid with a Latin Jazz group in “a night of Latin Music and salsa in a jazz style,” according to a flyer about the show. The second show, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, will include “more original compositions and jazz standards,” Madrid said.

Madrid is currently working with trumpet player, composer and Grammy winner Wynton Marsalis at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. Madrid is serving as the youth programs assistant in the Education Department at the center, he said. Marsalis is the program’s artistic director.

“I also am performing, leading my own quartet and teaching extensively in the Manhattan area,” Madrid said.

There is no charge to attend either of the Amador Live shows, Madrid said, but donations are welcome to his GoFundMe album release fund: https://gofund.me/ba6b6a85. The album, called “From This Moment Forward,” features Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter Michael Rodriguez.

Madrid is a graduate of York University with an artist diploma. He earned a BFA in music education at the University of New Mexico and a master’s degree in jazz and contemporary media from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

“Starting in eighth grade at Picacho Middle School under the instruction of Tony Montaño, I began my formal music training and fell in love with the saxophone,” Madrid said. He graduated from Mayfield High School.
