NMSU to host NM State Esports Invitational tournament April 6 & 7

The largest esports tournament in New Mexico will kick off this weekend at New Mexico State University. Now in its third year, the NM State Esports Invitational is open to the community to take part in the fun.

The competitive video gaming event will take place starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, at NMSU’s Corbett Center Student Union. The diverse tournament lineup includes a range of popular titles, including “League of Legends,” “Mario Kart 8,” “Rocket League,” “Splatoon 3,” “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” and “Valorant.”

“The invitational is the only event of its kind in New Mexico,” said Ryan May, NMSU esports liason. “This is, without a doubt, the largest gathering of esports competitors in the state. Esports has proven to engage students in the classroom and retain students throughout their educational experiences.”

Over 500 middle school, high school, and university students will compete in six tournaments and participate in an in-person gaming experience they don’t usually get outside of the esports state tournament.

“This is important because esports competitions are primarily online, and students never get exposed to the thrill of competing in person,” May said.

Esports is booming and considered one of the fastest growing industries in the world. May added that the number of high school esports programs in New Mexico jumped from a handful to 90 programs across the state. Las Cruces Public Schools has committed over $1 million to develop esports in its public schools.

“Gaming is one of the most inclusive activities and has connected millions of individuals worldwide,” he said. “That is why esports has grown so quickly and it’s just the beginning.”

The community is encouraged to attend the free event and vendors, food trucks, and other gaming opportunities will be available to everyone.

“This event is massive recruitment opportunity for New Mexico State University. It’s a powerful event that shines a light on the collegiate esports scene,” May said. “A parent from last year’s event said it best: ‘My son is about to finish his senior year in high school. He doesn't know what he wants to do when he graduates, but he wants to take a break from school. Because of this event, not only is he excited to attend college, but he’s set on going to NMSU!”
