The New Mexico State University Department of Art will host a variety of artists from across the country as part of the virtual Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series. The series will kick off with an online presentation by renowned New York based artist Michael Waugh at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27 via Zoom.

The Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series is sponsored by the NMSU Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences and paid for by the Lilian Steinman Visiting Artist Fund. Due to COVID-19, the series was moved online.

“Each year we invite artists and scholars to present on an array of interdisciplinary artistic practices and scholarly research and now by using an online platform we can increase access to these nationally recognized artists to a broader community of viewers,” said Marisa Sage, director of the University Art Museum. “This year’s artists touch on topics as varied as political and social sciences to coding and biological experimentation, there will be artistic research and creativity presented that will inspire those with varied interests.”

Waugh uses the technique of “micrography,” or pictures made up of minute handwriting, to provide added meaning to literary and political texts. Waugh lives in Brooklyn and graduated from New York University with a Master of Art degree in painting. For 10 years Waugh helped run the non-profit gallery Momenta Art in Brooklyn.

Waugh’s work has been featured in numerous collections, including the New York City Department of Education, the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the 21C Museum Hotel Collection.
