Music in the Park returns beginning June 4

Since 1994, the City of Las Cruces has hosted the Music in the Park Series delighting citizens with a variety of musical acts. This year, the series will consist of 16 concerts featuring 30 musical acts beginning Sunday, June 4, with Satisfied and Pure Magic.

Following the Mayor’s Jazz Fest, the Music in the Park Series concerts will be on Sundays at Young Park, 1905 E. Nevada Ave., from June to the end of August. On Thursday nights in July (July 13, 20 and 27), the series will shift Downtown to the Plaza de Las Cruces.

“Community Events such as concerts bring people together,” said Phillip Catanach, Deputy Director of the City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation. “The Music in the Park series provides an outlet for families, extended families, neighbors, friends, and future friends, to hang out together and enjoy an evening of music. There is nothing pitting people against each other, no agendas, politics, or sides to be taken, just great music.”

Music is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. for the series. At Young Park, guests are encouraged to bring chairs, snacks and blankets. Food trucks will be on site as well.

Each year, at least 70 percent of the series musicians are from the Las Cruces area. Catanach said the genres of music differ from country, tejano, bluegrass, jazz, mariachi, folk, rock and roll, oldies, hip-hop and soul. Past musical acts that have been a part of Music in the Park include Frank Ray, Maria Muldaur and Kiss Army.

“This year we have some great music to look forward to,” Catanach said. “Yarbrough Band, Satisfied, Mariachi Los Arrieros, Fungi Mungle, Joshua Lucero, Border Jazz, and Cautivo Norteno are a few of the local and regional bands set to play.”

July 20 on the Plaza de Las Cruces, TNT Houston, an AC/DC Tribute Show Band will perform. Local band Flat Blak will be ending the 2023 series and Metalachi, the world’s first and only heavy metal mariachi band from Los Angeles.

Catanach said seeing younger families bring their children to Music in the Park just as their parents brought them when they were growing up is a great thing to see and a great example of how traditions begin.

“It’s a great event. It’s free. It’s family friendly. Sunday nights and Thursday nights are a great time to get together with family, friends, and to make new friends,” Catanach said.
