The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2023 Mayor’s Jazz Fest Concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 28, at Plaza de Las Cruces, 100 N. Main St. downtown

There is no charge to attend.

The concert will feature El Paso’s Frank Zona, with Albuquerque’s Son Como Son as the opening act.

Zona, a saxophonist, leads a group known for its high energy, rhythm and blues-influenced Jazz, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release.

Zona’s album releases include “Frank Zona & Urban Edge – Live!!” and the studio recording “Over The Edge,” which has received national and international airplay since its release, the city said. Zona also has received recording credits with Blues Legend Dorothy “Miss Blues” Ellis, Bob Piorun and many others.

Zona studied saxophone with New York Jazz legend Joe Manzone, University of Illinois woodwind professor Ralph Athey and others. He has opened for The Yardbirds, James Brown, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Ryan Starr and Ozomatli and has shared the stage with Dave Koz, Candy Dulfer, Richard Elliot and Najee.

Son Como Son, which bills itself as “Salsa Cuban Style,” was founded in 1993 and is one of Albuquerque’s longest standing and most popular salsa ensembles, the city said.

Son Como Son plays regularly at the New Mexico Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars Series, The Cooperage and special concerts. Including the Telluride Jazz Festival. The group is directed by trombonist/vocalist/percussionist/composer/arranger César Bauvallet, who moved from Havana, Cuba to Albuquerque in 1992.
