International Make Music Day is Monday, June 21, in Las Cruces.

The City of Las Cruces-sponsored event brings together local organizations hosting free live concerts throughout the city featuring local musicians. It will include live and online performances and demonstrations.

Free live performances will begin the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Klein Park, 155 N. Mesquite St., and will include mariachi music and educational demonstrations. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch, water and lawn chairs or a blanket, the city said.

Plaza de Las Cruces, 100 N. Main St., will host a showcase of local bands of varying genres from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring water, lawn chairs and umbrellas for shade.

There will also be live performances at Hubbard’s Music-N-More, 108 Wyatt Drive, which will host bands on their stage throughout the day; and Las Cruces Ukes, a local ukulele club, which will host music lessons and sing-alongs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Good Samaritan Society social center, 3011 Buena Vida Circle.

Local event organizers are also looking for musicians, music teachers, community organizations and volunteers to participate in this year’s event. Fill out the interest form at  https://forms.gle/PLkVaiWF7dvfsJS48.

“Music has a special way of lifting spirits, bringing people together and making things better,” said Assistant City Manager Ikani Taumoepeau. “Las Cruces welcomes all musicians to dust off your instruments and play loud and proud wherever you are June 21st. Our city is proud to be on the Make Music Day 2021 international roster, allowing us to showcase our talented individuals and diverse venues.”

“We are excited to once again partner with community organizations to showcase the music and culture of Las Cruces,” said Doña Ana Arts Council Executive Director Greg Smith. “Make Music Day offers a chance for residents and visitors to enjoy a day centered around making music and discovering how the culture and history of Las Cruces continues to influence the artform.”

Make Music Day premiered in Las Cruces last year as an all-virtual event, with live performances streaming on various social media channels and recorded performances at The Range, 3217 El Camino Real Road, that were featured in the Make Music Day global livestream.

All live events will follow the most current Covid-19 safe practices and state and local restrictions including mask-wearing for those who are not fully vaccinated.

In honor of Make Music Day, City Hall, 700 N. Main St., and Visit Las Cruces, 336 S. Main St., will feature orange exterior lighting on June 21.
