Light Art Space Features Three Community Art Exhibits

Posted

Light Art Space is celebrating its seventh anniversary as one of Silver City’s top galleries. You will not be disappointed with the three November exhibitions, which promise a diverse and stimulating artistic experience.

Gallery director Karen Hymer is very excited about the November exhibitions. “A key aspect of Light Art Space’s mission is to provide community members with opportunities to showcase their work in a professional environment,” Hymer said.

Light Art Space is located in the Historic Arts District at 209 West Broadway Street, Silver City., “This dynamic, contemporary art space explores diverse perspectives and ideas through unique photography, printmaking and other media by local artists,” according to the SCAA Red Dot Guide. Workshops in a variety of media including alternative photographic processes, printmaking, drawing, and bookmaking provide an interactive art experience.”

Opening on First Friday, Nov. 7, the north gallery presents “How Did I Get Here from There” by Diane Kleiss.

“Diane, one of Silver City’s premier artists, paints and sculpts with beeswax, an ancient encaustic medium that she pours, carves, and molds,” Hymer said. “In her series ‘Flights of Fancy,’ Diane explores her interest in ravens, inspired by their intelligence and curiosity. Drawing from cultural myths about women flying, as well as her own dreams, she created a three-part sculpture called ‘When Women Were Birds.’ Her work continually follows new inspirations, guided by her passion. I am excited and honored to have her work in the gallery.”

Kleiss will also be presenting and signing her recently released memoir “Learning to Fly, An Artist Journey.”

Also opening Nov. 7 in the Flash gallery is “20 Years of Creativity,” by the Southwest Women’s Fiber Arts Collective. This exhibit is organized by committee members Lynn Welsch, Lisa Rush, Vicky Gadberry and Collette Kelly.

“The exhibit celebrates SWFAC’s 20th anniversary and showcases our members’ creativity with a variety of fiber art,” said Welsch.

Members make many types of fiber art encompassing the manual manipulation of a variety of fibers by weaving, knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, basket making, and paper making to name just a few of the techniques.

“Art is not a thing, it is a way,” Rush said.

SWFAC has celebrated their anniversary with the annual Tapestry of Talent fashion show and was showcased in the recent Silco Community Film Festival in a 25-minute documentary. Follow SWFAC’s annual events, classes, and workshops on Facebook at Southwest Women’s Fiber Arts Collective and the website Fiberartscollective.org.

SWFAC was founded in 2005 and is a local, all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with the economic development goal to stimulate and support successful cottage industry in the southwest. Both novice and skilled SWFAC artists enrich the community by nurturing and empowering each other, fostering opportunities to gain new experience, expand talent and earn income from their art.

The Red Dot Fearlessly Independent Showcase exhibit opens on Nov. 20 and runs through Nov. 30. This is the annual Silver City Art Association group of independent artist members. These “indie” artists work in their own private studios and may be affiliated with a gallery.

This exhibit brings their amazing artwork out to be viewed.

“There are 51 of us creating in every medium and a variety of styles, traditions, and approaches,” said SCAA Indie chair Kathleen Koopman. “The highpoint of our year is the Fearlessly Independent Showcase exhibit, the culmination of a year’s work in the studio.”

The opening reception will be Friday, Nov. 21 from 5-7 p.m.

“Artists will be there to meet and discuss their work, refreshments will be provided, and live music will round out the evening,” Koopman added. “There will be judging for prizes, and the winners will be announced.”

Featured artists will be present all day to talk about their work, their processes and inspiration during an additional indie exhibit event happening Saturday, Nov. 29, Small Business Saturday. Several artists will be doing live demonstrations of their processes. “As a member of the Silver City Art Association, I am always happy to exhibit members’ work,” Hymer said. “Each year, I am amazed by the quality and talent that exists in our small town. Our November exhibitions promise to offer Silver City a diverse and stimulating experience. For me, this is what makes Silver City such a special place to live and to visit.”
