KRWG wins awards, regional Emmy nomination for broadcast content

New Mexico State University operated television station KRWG-TV has earned a number of accolades this awards season. KRWG includes a National Public Radio (NPR) affiliated radio station and Public Broadcasting (PBS) television station in Las Cruces on the campus of NMSU.

“These awards are confirmation of what I already know,” said KRWG General Manager Adrian Velarde, “Our entire content staff is working hard to produce relevant, high quality programming for the viewers and listeners of our region.”

Joe Widmer and Christian Valle are nominated for a Rocky Mountain Emmy award for their Historic Cultural Single Story titled “Smokey Bear: The New Mexico Connection.” If they win at the award ceremony on Sept. 19, it would be the duo’s second win. “Joe and Christian are talented storytellers and have the technical skills to make a project shine,” Velarde said. “I was thrilled with last year’s Emmy and have my fingers crossed for this year.”

The New Mexico Broadcasters Association awards were announced in August. KRWG took home several awards. In Large Market Radio, Anthony Moreno earned the award for Complete News Cast Station; Fred Martino won for his Feature News Story “Mayoral Candidates Discuss ‘Business Friendly’” and Edmundo Resendez and Jacob Lockwood took home top honors for Specialty Show “Beer Confidential Live.”

Leora Zeitlin won first place in the New Mexico Press Women’s Communications Contests and third place in the National Federation of Press Women 2020 Communications Contest for her tribute to Mark Medoff in the category of Prepared Report, Radio.
