The 2022 NMSU Jazz Jumpstart is the only place for school bands to get a 'jumpstart' on their jazz season, and it is a great place for everyone to enjoy some outstanding jazz music.

NMSU Jazz Jumpstart will be held Thursday-Friday, Nov. 10-11, in Atkinson Recital Hall in the NMSU Music Building, 1075 N. Horseshoe St. on campus.

Tickets are $5 for each day.

In addition to performing, Stafford and Bushman will be giving clinics and masterclasses for middle- and high-school bands from throughout the region. Other clinicians include Las Cruces drummer Brian Wright, El Paso double bassist Christian Chesanek and tenor saxophonist Josh Carter.

Stafford is the Laura H. Carnell Professor Music, director of jazz studies and chair of instrumental studies for Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance.

“I’m excited to work with Jacob and all of extraordinary musicians,” Stafford told the Bulletin. “Jazz music always finds a way to bring people together to celebrate and rejoice!”

“Terrell is one of the biggest names in jazz and jazz education,” said NMSU trumpet professor Jacob Dalager, who is the lead coordinator of Jazz Jumpstart.

The late Grammy-winning pianist and composer McCoy Tyner described Stafford as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player.”

London-based jazz pianist and computer Bushman will be flying in for Jazz Jumpstart, Dalager said.

Bushman was described by Clash magazine as Canadian classical pianist “Glenn Gould, (Hungarian computer and pianist Béla) Bartók all in one.”

Several Big Band arrangements of Bushman’s original works will be premiered during Jazz Jumpstart, Dalager said.
