GREEN GRAPPLER

Green Grappler: City releases new 2022 schedule

Posted

The City of Las Cruces mailed its 2022 Green Grappler pickup schedule to city residents earlier this month.

“The Grappler is a monthly residential service provided by Las Cruces Utilities to pick up large, bulky trash items that are too big to fit into your brown city trash container. On the same day, the Green Grappler picks up yard waste (green waste) to be recycled into composted mulch,” according to the city’s website.

“Both grapplers come to your house once-a-month on your normal trash day. There is no additional charge for this service,” the website added.

“The Grappler will pick up an amount equal to two-level half-ton pickup truck loads, or 4 cubic yards, which is equivalent to four 5-foot by three-foot by two-foot adjacent piles.

“All Grappler and Green Grappler items should be placed at the curb and should be at least 5 feet away from all other items and obstacles, such as any other trash, furniture, trash container, cars, trees and mailboxes,” the website continued.

“Examples of items the Grappler can pick up include extra trash, furniture, mattresses and appliances.

“The Grappler cannot pick up any type of construction or remodeling material such as glass or mirrors, cast iron sinks or bathtubs, concrete, flooring, fluorescent bulbs or fixtures, hazardous waste, insulation or fiberglass, paint, roofing, toilets or any ceramic appliances or vehicle parts.

“The Green Grappler picks up yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, weeds and tree branches. These items are then taken to the Old Foothills Landfill to be recycled into composted mulch, helping divert unnecessary items taking up space in the regional landfill.”

For Green Grappler pick up, “ensure your tree branches are less than 5 feet in length and 5 inches in diameter. Stack (tree) branches neatly at the curb. Bag grass clippings and leaves in clear plastic bags so the driver can see it is yard waste and not trash and will be taken to the appropriate landfill site.

“If your green waste items do not fit within the guidelines above, contact Customer Central, and on a case-by-case basis, (the city) will do (its) best to help dispose of your material properly.”

The city advises residents to “keep your Green Grappler items separate from any other trash, furniture, your trash container or any other obstacles.”
