Students from all six Las Cruces public high schools celebrated the end of their high school experience by graduating last week.

One of these students is Arrowhead Park Early College High School Valedictorian Erika Cámuñez who graduated with a 4.68 GPA and has plans of attending New Mexico State University.

Cámuñez says that she plans on studying mechanical engineering and economics in college and finding a career path that suits her in college.

“I have a lot of different interests.” she said. “I’ve been looking at things like marketing for a biomedical company.”

Alongside her studies, Cámuñez has been active in aerial skills and performances with Zia Aerial Performing Arts since she was six years old.

“People would recognize it from circus acts and stuff but there are a lot of different apparatus,” Cámuñez said. “I personally focus on the lyra and the silk.”

Her father, Gary Cámuñez, said that he was surprised to hear her GPA at the graduation ceremony because it was even higher than what Erika had told him.

“I’m still kind of walking on air,” he said.

Three high schools — Arrowhead Park Early College High School, Rio Grande Preparatory Institute and Organ Mountain High School — all saw an increase in graduation rates. Las Cruces Public Schools had a higher graduation than the statewide average with over 80% of students graduating according to a press release from LCPS.
