As part of the Mesilla Valley Film Society’s (MVFS) ongoing film noir series, the Fountain Theatre will host a screening of the 1944 classic, "Double Indemnity" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Fountain Theatre, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe in Mesilla.
The film tells the story of an insurance salesman who gets roped into a murderous scheme when he falls for a sensual woman intent on killing her husband and living off the fraudulent accidental death claim, MVFS said in a news release.
“Double Indemnity” was directed by Billy Wilder and starred Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1945, including best picture. It is generally ranked by multiple sources among the greatest movies of all time.
A film noir (“a cinematic term used to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, according to Wikipedia”), "Double Indemnity” was based on a novella by James M. Cain and adapted for the screen by Wilder and novelist and screenwriter Raymond Chandler.
“I’ve seen this movie a dozen times and I like it more every time,” MVFS film noir series curator Kevin Church said. “If I had to choose one movie to show to someone to explain why I love this genre so much, it’s this.”
Tickets are $10, with discounts for senior citizens and MVFS members. Tickets are available at mesillavalleyfilm.org and will be available at the box office.
