Anne Q, a busy mother of a 7-year-old, makes a living out of  doing her original art. The artist, graphic designer and printmaker creates work exploring themes of mental and physical dystopia using a combination of analog and digital mediums.

Layering found images with layers of texture, she creates imagery of uneasy comfort veiled in cryptic messages pulled from the past and present.

“I take images from old books and magazines and see how those images can play off each other,” she said.

At  5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, an exhibit of her work, “Sweet Dreams,” a series of multimedia serigraphy collages, opens at the Mandrake Fine Art Gallery with a reception. The exhibit will remain on view through April 1. The gallery is at 501 E. Hadley Ave. in Las Cruces. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Anne Q became interested in the medium of printmaking back in high school. She likes the accessibility of the medium.“It’s important to have artwork everyone can afford and enjoy,” she said.

Traveling to shows across the country, Anne Q’s work has been shown in El Paso, Las Angeles, Chicago, Cleveland and Las Cruces. She has self-published several zines and been published in a few others. She has also collaborated with artists in New York, France and Germany.

A native of Las Cruces and part of the New Mexico State University printmaking program in 2013, Anne Q is fascinated with the way images can play off each other. With training also in graphic design, she has put her talent to work commercially creating band posters and T-shirts which are available through the website pleasurepanes.bigcartel.com. She said the band posters came about when she was part of a band and didn’t like the promotional posters made for events and started making her own.

“What I really like about Anne’s works is how emotionally charged they are,” said gallery owner Michael Poncè. “The work is simple but powerful and that’s a thing I like to bring to bring to the gallery. We are a very progressive gallery with new and edgy work from local artists.”
