Dance troupe brings faerie season to Black Box

Faeries, came take me out of this dull world,
For I would ride with you upon the wind,
Run on the top of the dishevelled tide,
And dance upon the mountains like a flame!
William Butler Yeats, “The Land of Heart’s Desire”

The Dance Eclectic, a dance ensemble based in Las Cruces, presents an original show this weekend on a dual theme: faeries and the cycle of seasons.

“La Saison de la Faerie,” a year in the making, uses the seasons as a structure for a series of solos, duets and group pieces with faeries of various shapes and sizes, according to the group.

“We think about faeries in the mythological sense,” the group states on the Dance Eclectic website. “These types of faeries have roots in Greek, Persian, Brythonic, Gaelic, and German peoples.”

The dance works were choreographed by the dance company’s members and will also feature performers from its student company, the Dance Eclectic Studio and from Oddlab Entertainment of El Paso.

“…faeries can take all shapes and forms,” the company states. “Some are humans, some look like animals.”

Founded in 2016, the nonprofit group is artistic home to a company of performers and choreographers with a variety of dance backgrounds, from teens to adult, “to provide opportunities for dancers of all skill levels, backgrounds and abilities as well as individuals who are simply creative and want an outlet to dance and work collaboratively with others with similar passions,” a news release stated.

The group produces two shows annually, an original work along with an annual production, “Fringe Dance Festival,” showcasing their repertoire.

“La Saison de la Faerie” will be presented for two performances at the Black Box Theatre downtown, 430 N. Main Street: 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 18; and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. Ticketing information is available online at No-Strings.org or by calling 575-523-1223.
