LAS CRUCES MUSEUM OF ART

City Museum of Art hosting Sonya Fe exhibit

Posted

An art exhibition entitled “Are You with Me?” by Las Cruces contemporary Chicana artist Sonya Fe continues through July 24 at the Las Cruces Museum of Art (MOA), 491 N. Main St. in downtown Las Cruces.

“Fe’s exhibit is both a biographical depiction of her own life and of those who are often overlooked,” the City of Las Cruces said in a news release. “Fe’s work reflects social and cultural issues with themes centering around women and children. Her use of bold brush strokes and vibrant colors creates beautiful dynamic paintings, visual stories of women’s place in society and childhood innocence in a rough world. Fe encourages the viewer to question, comment and act.”

“I want the viewer to stand with me while looking at the work,” Fe said in the news release. “I want them to feel, see and understand what I am saying – to not be left behind. Are you with me?”

In compliance with state Covid-19 restrictions, Las Cruces Museums have instituted new procedures, with visitation currently permitted by reservation only. Call 575-522-3120 or email education@las-cruces.org to reserve a time to visit.

Museum visitors must wear a mask, maintain distance of at least six feet from others at all times and refrain from touching museum objects.

Fe, born in 1952, grew up in California and made her first drawings with crayons and chalk. During a career spanning more than 60 years, she and her unique art have been featured on the covers of magazines like “Sacramento Talent” and New York’s “Sun Storm Fine Art,” “Elan” (the September 1990 issue also featured Julia Child, Gloria Allred and Linda McCartney), “Joaquin” and even in actor Cheech Marin’s “Papel Chicano” art book.

Fe’s works have been shown internationally and hang in many galleries, museums and private collections.

Fey relocated to Las Cruces in 2017.

Fey grew up in a family of eight. Her father, a bus driver, and her mother, a bookkeeper, were both interested in the arts. Her father, who liked to sketch in his free time, often took Fe on outings so she could observe the work of other artists and do some of her own drawing.

MOA is accessible via RoadRUNNER Transit bus route 1, stop 36.
