The City of Las Cruces Museum of Art (MOA) will host “Origami in the Garden: Transforming Paper to Sculpture,” featuring innovative artwork of Santa Fe artists Kevin and Jennifer Box, the city said in a news release.
The exhibit opens Friday, June 2, and continues through Sept. 23 at MOA, 491 N. Main St. downtown.
An opening reception held 5-8 p.m. June 2 will include the Boxes, along with origami master Robert J. Lang, and a gallery tour.
“Through a laborious process using the lost-wax technique, Kevin Box transforms both large- and small-scale paper origami pieces into metal sculptures,” the news release said.
The Boxes created the exhibit in 2013 and held their first show at Santa Fe Botanical Garden in 2014.
Since then, about three million visitors to botanical gardens and museums throughout the United States have experienced the sculptures, the city said.
The exhibit features an interactive station where guests can fold butterflies and either take them home or leave them to be included in an installation that will grow over the course of the exhibition, the news release said. A wide range of educational programs is planned during the exhibit, including origami folding events, a lecture about the history of origami, printmaking using origami designs and a celebration of International Day of Peace using origami pieces.
MOA is open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission fee. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1.
