The Branigan Cultural Center is accepting proposals for community exhibits on themes of cultural and historical significance for the borderlands and southwestern U.S., the city announced, with a deadline of May 17.

According to a news release, submission topics can encompass a wide range including historic or contemporary issues. Submissions are welcome from scholars both formal and informal, from cultural heritage organizations and artists or artists’ groups.

The center said examples of previous exhibition topics include historical postcards depicting Las Cruces, film and theater history in the Mesilla Valley, and the impact of water on the borderlands as well as artistic works addressing the Trinity atomic weapon test, life along the Rio Grande and Día de los Muertos.

Proposals must be submitted online. The center directed the public to the Las Cruces Museums website, LasCruces.gov/museums, and click on a link to a SurveyMonkey form.

Needed for the application are: A short written explanation of the exhibition theme, a statement by the scholar, artist or group, six to 10 images of proposed objects or artwork for display and an estimate of the linear or square footage required.

The center said exhibitions typically open for eight to 12 weeks.

Submissions opened on April 1 and close at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 17. More information is available at the web page or by phone at 575-541-2154.
