Booms, Busts, and Simple Things

Posted

It’s easy to get caught up in the news of the day, so much of which is ugly and negative. I’m not sure there isn’t politics in a place like Silver City, but it feels a little different here.

While state legislators convene in Santa Fe this month to argue about a lot, but solve very little, if recent trends are any indication, I get to take a break from some of that to enjoy pulling together content for this edition of Desert Exposure.

Inside this magazine, you’ll have the opportunity to join Dr. Scott Fritz on a search to understand Silver City’s boom-or-bust economic cycles. The story includes some interesting information about men and women who created the economy that still drives Silver City today. It’s the latest in our series on Silver City Museum’s book, “Unpacking Silver City.”

You also get the chance to read about the work of sculptor Otto Rigan and the motivation for his art. He has created some pretty cool pieces, including the sculpture featured on our front cover this month.

If you’re looking for a list of places to go and things to do, I hope you’ll find it here in this magazine. If we’ve missed something, please keep us updated about current happenings in the region.

I look forward to hearing from you as you share your stories and those of people you know and love. I can’t wait to share them in future issues of Desert Exposure.
