Leading up to the Hatch Chile Festival on Labor Day weekend, legendary blues guitarist "Guitar Shorty" will play a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at Sparky’s Burgers and BBQ restaurant in Hatch.

At 86 years of age, Shorty is a giant in the blues world that has been entertaining audiences for more than five decades. He is credited with influencing guitar greats Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy.

Known for his high-energy blues performances, Guitar Shorty has played alongside great blues and R&B artists like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, B.B. King, Guitar Slim, Big Joe Turner, Little  Richard, and T-Bone Walker.

The Chicago Tribune calls Shorty’s performances "Defiant, electric blues with piercing intensity and raw venom that’ll leave your ears singed."

“We just felt Guitar Shorty would be a great way to help kick off the Hatch Chile Festival this year,” said Teako Nunn, co-owner of Sparky’s Burgers and BBQ. “We are so incredibly fortunate to be able to host one of the best in blues music.”

Sparky’s opens at 11 a.m. and will be serving food up to 5:30 p.m. before the free performance.
