The Silver City Art Association kicks off the spring and summer art season in April. Silver City is known regionally and nationally as “An Art Destination” and SCAA is proud of that.
With better weather to get out of the house and partake in the many art adventures SCAA calls April “Red Dot Month.” The Red Dot refers to the SCAA logo of a red dot bearing the word ART in the center.
SCAA has moved its popular Fall Weekend at the Galleries “WAG” to April from October. WAG from now on will always be the first full weekend in April. This moves it from an overly busy weekend in October. WAG weekend now is the intro to a warm and busy Red Dot spring and summer.
First Friday, April 3, will start the many Weekend at the Galleries happenings along with all the SCAA art events that will be offered throughout Red Dot Month.
First Friday is a year-round event and is always a delightful evening to get out and see art. BUT – April First Friday will have extra art features. Each SCAA gallery will host new exhibits with featured artists.
Light Art Space Gallery presents two artists – Richard Harper and Robert Alfred Brooks. Diana Ingalls Leyba is hosting “The Art of Resistance.” View “The Members Show” at Grant County Art Guild Studio. Silver City Gallery is featuring art by Chery Fenley and Beatriz Geraldo. Otter Chaos hosts book artist Linda Anderson. Made In Silver City will have a special exhibition “Romantic Realism: by Michael Wilkinson.”
Along this WAG evening art walk you will hear music, munch on great food at the gallery receptions and see artists’ demos.
The art exhibits and demos will continue all weekend at each SCAA gallery. A special WAG brochure has been created and distributed throughout Silver City for the past month describing gallery locations and offerings. The WAG brochure is available at all galleries, restaurants and at the Visitor Center. Many of the neighboring businesses will be offering specials for the art viewers as well.
One feature of the Weekend at the Galleries is the annual Southwest Women’s Fiber Art Collective’s fashion show, “Tapestry of Talent.” SWFAC is an Art Association gallery member and the annual fashion show is their gallery event.
The fashion show will be held on Saturday, April 4 at The Hearth, 1915 North Swan Street. Add this event to your weekend’s plans.
The fashion show is from 1-3 p.m. and will have more than 90 handmade fiber items created by SWFAC members. The fiber fashions range from weavings and quilts, to fashion items. An added attraction is six extraordinary raffle baskets worth around $500 each. Raffle tickets are only sold at the fashion show. The $20 fashion show tickets often sell out so get your tickets early.
They were available at local shops in March and now they are available on Eventbrite at fiberartscollective.org. Tickets at the door, maybe.
Red Dot month continues on Saturday, April 11 with a Silver City Art Association Spring Art Market featuring a variety of SCAA artist members. It will be in the historic Murray Hotel Ballroom located at 200 West Broadway Street, Silver City. The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shop amazing art and fine crafts from pottery, paintings, prints, wearable art, sculpture, wood creations, to digital imagery and much more.
The newest edition of the SCAA annual Red Dot Guide comes out each April. Much hard work goes into herding the member artists and creating the RDG. All Gallery, Studio, and Independent Artist members are featured by category. SCAA calls this the Grant County artists’ phone book. Members are listed with a photograph, description of their artwork and contact information. This year each category will highlight an artist member.
The 2026 Red Dot Guide is dedicated to artist Joel Armstrong who was an outstanding SCAA member and re-known Silver City artist. Joel left us way too soon in 2025 and will be missed greatly by all in the community. The Red Dot Guide cover along with a four page spread in the RDG features Joel’s art and life.
Maps of the downtown studios and galleries help to guide visitors. A new section has been added this year to guide visitors and tourists to local restaurants and businesses. The Red Dot Guide is distributed throughout New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Texas visitor centers and art locations. Silver City is truly an “Art Destination.”
The many art exhibits, classes and events continue throughout April and will constantly change every month.
