Arts Exposure

Alto Artists Celebrate 16 Years

Variety, access focus of mountain tour

Posted

In 2004, a new self-guided artists’ studio tour began in the Alto area, just north of Ruidoso in Lincoln County. While a studio tour was already established in Lincoln County, the objective for the new event was clear, provide smaller driving distances and easier access to the artists, allowing art lovers to visit studios throughout Alto, savoring fine art in an extensive variety of media including oil and watercolor paintings, metal sculptures, woodworking, ceramics, photography and custom jewelry.

Sixteen years later the tour remains committed to providing easy access to a variety of exceptional art and exposure to the wealth of art skills available in the Alto area. In addition to easy access, the Alto Artists Tour is exposure to a teaser sample of tour artwork with displays at a free preview party held at the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts, 108 Spencer Road in Alto, before the tour begins.

At the Spencer Preview Party, Wednesday, July 31, drinks and hors d’oeuvres are provided while patrons browse artists’ unique and creative talents. With brochure in hand and seeing samples of artwork, patrons can plan tour visits for the three days, Aug. 2 to 4.  A silent auction is included with each of the 22 artists contributing.

This year, to kickoff National American Artist Month, the Alto artists honor the art of Mescalero Apache Oliver Enjady.  Enjady’s art is mixed media contemporary, blending in the traditional stories and songs of his native background.

Maps of the tour can be found at the Chamber of Commerce office in Ruidoso and businesses throughout Lincoln County.  You can see sample artwork and bios of participating Alto artists on the website, www.altoartists.com.
