NMSU tackles ‘Fefu and Her Friends’ in return to live theater Sept. 23

The New Mexico State University Theatre Department celebrates the return of live theater to the Mark and Stephanie Medoff Theatre with the premiere of “Fefu and Her Friends.”

There is an early preview performance at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25 and Oct. 1-2 and a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3.

“’Fefu and Her Friends’ is an avant-garde, absurdist play, written in the 1970s, at a time when feminism was becoming a stronger force in society,” said NMSU Theatre Department assistant professor Nichole Hamilton, who is directing the play. “The staging of the play itself is absurdist, and it brings the audience into the absurdist experience in the second act by dividing the audience into four groups. There are four sets all going on simultaneously, but each section of the audience only watches one at a time, then moves on to the next, until all four groups have seen all four sections.”

Hamilton said the play includes mature content. She said all audience members will be required to wears masks.

The cast includes NMSU theatre students Sage Drake, Dominique Gomez, Darcy Harman, Yasmine Jahangiri, Kamryn Neill (as Fefu, which is short for Stephanie), Eliza Phillips and Jensen Stell, along with NMSU Theatre Department adjunct professor Christa Fredrickson.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for senior citizens, $12 for students and $6 for under age 18.

Seating will be limited to 80 attendees for each performance and will be general admission (no assigned seating).

Tickets can be purchased online at www.onthestage.tickets/new-mexico-state-university.
