Rincon de Mesilla, 2488 Calle de Guadalupe, across the street from La Posta and the Fountain Theatre, will have its grand opening Saturday evening, May 22.
The five-room, 1,700-square-foot building includes unique textiles (including handmade curtains, bedding, tablecloths), jewelry, woodcrafts, sculptures, espadrilles, purses, artwork, patio furniture and more, from New Mexico, the Republic of Mexico, Guatemala and Peru. There is also an in-house coffee shop featuring local coffee – including artisan coffees, café con leche and café ole, and Cuban cordatido coffee – and pastries, said owners Juan and Claudia Albert, who have lived in Mesilla for about 10 years ago. And, books will soon be added for sale.
He is from the Republic of Cuba and grew up in Spain; she is from Cuidad Juarez.
The couple drove by the site of their new business about a month ago, Juan Albert said, when it was a still a vacant building and for rent. He called owners Joe and Elaine Foster, reached a rental agreement, and “the rest is history,” Juan Albert said.
The Alberts had previously owed a store on Avenida de Mesilla, but wanted a Mesilla location instead, where they cold “create ambiance” and feature artwork for local and regional artists and books by local writers. After all, “rincon” means “the center” or “the place to be,” Juan Albert said.
“We didn’t want to be a souvenir shop,” Juan Albert said. “We want to showcase art.”
“This is a fusion of many things,” Claudia said, including the history of Mesilla.
Rincon de Mesilla will be open 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week.
