An art opening will be 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, during Silver City's 2nd Saturday Art Walk. Beck will show mixed-media collages and paintings that explore the creative possibilities of working with discarded materials. Her pieces incorporate cast-offs ranging from junk mail to old South American street posters, engaging in a larger conversation about systemic disintegration and decay, as well as the potential for transformation within chaos and breakdown. • New work by Crystal Foreman and Alec Johnson, opens with a party 4-6 p.m. Sept. 14, at Sterling Fine Art in Silver City. Foreman captures ephemeral beauty of desert southwest with oil paintings of the place she has lived for most of her life. Johnson presents artistic bravado with work from several of his series, which includes his love of New Mexico. The gallery can be found at 306 N. Bullard St. in Silver City. • Light Art Space, located at 209 W. Broadway in Silver City’s historic art district, is featuring “Evolution at Work: Mimi and Art Peterson,” through Oct. 27. This exhibition features the art of two artists working with a variety of methods and materials. The modern/contemporary sculptures of Art Peterson range from abstract to whimsical, often including found objects. Mimi Peterson’s multilayered, mixed media works on paper and canvas present a new way of seeing the world. “Variegated Views,” through Oct. 6, features works from Joel Armstrong, Ben Brown, Valerie Calloway, Carmen Ruiz, Eugene Starobinsky and Cougar Vigil. • The Grant County Art Guild is now at 316 N. Bullard St., formerly the Hester House in Silver City. A retrospective show honoring former Silver City watercolorist Audrey Goodleaf through Sept. 14. A reception will be 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Guild Gallery. Audrey, who passed away last September painting in Silver City during her golden years. • The Cloudcroft Art Society has a Labor Day art exhibit and sale at the Nivison Library, in the old red brick schoolhouse, 90 Swallow Pl. in Cloudcroft. The show will be 10 a.m.-4p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, through Sunday, Sept. 1, and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2. The show features original art works by members, including paintings in several media, photography and photographic art, pottery, jewelry, fiber art, woodwork, greeting cards and more. CAS holds monthly meetings from the second Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the library. DEMING
• Lon and Wilhelmina Shelton and Claude Smith are three local artists who will have their work on display at the Deming Art Center Sept. 1-28. Lon and Willy Shelton have both had a camera in hand since they were kids. Using film, developing a lot of bad shots could become expensive so they learned to concentrate on composition and lighting. Although they take photo-trips, they don’t really have to travel very far to get some great shots—their backyard is a photographer’s dream. • The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery, 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe, across from the historic Fountain Theatre, features two local artists for the month of September, Patricia Black and Richard Spellenberg. Black creates one of a kind, meticulously crafted art pieces from gourds. Spellenberg is a retired biology professor from NMSU and a botanist who studied plant diversity, and uses many different kinds of woods. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. • The exhibit “Charcoal and Steel” opens 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Tombaugh Gallery. A second reception, with artists talks, will be held 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4. The Tombaugh Gallery is located at 2000 S.
