Healthy Energy

How the self-empowering knowledge of Energy Medicine awakens the healer within each one of us.

By Allee Barr

Energy is as old as the universe, present in everything, and literally makes the world go around. It is the subtle, yet perceptible, life force fundamental for survival in humans and all other species. Without it, there is simply no life. And energy that moves fluidly and unobstructed in the body creates radiant health. Energy moves in patterns that cross over, figure-eight, spiral, weave and communicate with one another throughout our bodies down to the level of our DNA and cells. It sends blood coursing through our veins and arteries, moves electrical impulses along our nerves, and keeps our organs working in concert.

Subtle energy is known by names such as "vital force," "chi," "ki," "holy spirit," "mana" and "prana" in various cultures. People have used forms of energy medicine to heal themselves centuries before our current system of western medicine was established.

Many modern energy-medicine techniques have their roots in ancient and indigenous cultures around the planet. Some familiar forms of energy medicine include acupressure, acupuncture, Eden Energy Medicine, Reiki, Healing Touch, homeopathy, QE and NAET (an allergy-elimination technique).

Eden Energy Medicine (EEM) is "the art and science of working with and teaching people to work with their energies to empower them to live happier, healthier lives." A synthesis of ancient and modern healing techniques from many cultures, it naturally balances the body's energy systems by employing non-invasive techniques on and around the body.

Donna Eden, the healer and spokeswoman for Eden Energy Medicine, co-authored the award-winning books Energy Medicine and Energy Medicine for Women with her husband, David Feinstein, PhD, a well-respected psychologist. These books have been translated into several languages and teach the basic techniques of EEM. Donna has worked with more than 10,000 private clients and taught effective, easy-to-learn techniques for balancing the body's nine major energy systems to some 100,000 professionals and lay people worldwide. She and David are passionate about teaching people that "understanding our energy systems is essential for health and healing." Their works creates a bridge between "alternative" and allopathic Western medicine.

Donna draws upon profound personal experience. She had tuberculosis, asthma, allergies to "everything under the sun," multiple sclerosis, then a heart attack by age 27. Everything was breaking down in her body, and she was told by her doctors to find another mother for her children. Rather than be discouraged, she "got motivated" and learned to heal herself by balancing her body's energies. Today she is a healthy, vibrant and joyful grandmother of 67.

Life-force energies must be well-balanced and move continuously and fluidly for optimal health. When our energies are overabundant, insufficient or communicating poorly, we experience signs of imbalance, such as pain, poor digestion, irritability or fatigue. Disease symptoms are signals that physical, mental, emotional or spiritual energies are moving ineffectively or not at all. EEM works with the innate, intelligent healing capability within each of us to bring us back into balance.

There is a saying that "healing goes where energy flows." EEM supports this flow by first identifying, then correcting imbalances with techniques like holding, tapping, massaging, stretching and smoothing specific points or entire areas on or around the body. Doing Donna's Daily Energy Routine and other recommended "energy-cises" improves results, keeps one's energies humming along between sessions, and is crucial to establishing a resilient foundation for deeper, longer-lasting work. Donna states, "I never had a client (I) worked with for a while who was not responsive to energy interventions." The key is to "apply the correct technique for that person at that moment."

What can EEM address? The answer is simply just about anything and everything. Stress creates energy blockages that lead to lowered immune function, making us more susceptible to colds, flu and other physical, mental and emotional complaints and illnesses. EEM is an excellent tool to sooth the stresses of modern life. It even helps nip an illness in the bud, so we may avoid becoming sick, or at least experience milder symptoms with a faster, easier recovery if we do get sick.

EEM can provide relief for those suffering from allergies, chemical/ environmental sensitivities (MCS/EI), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and autoimmune illnesses.

Energy Medicine for Women addresses the energetic foundation of women's hormonal and immune systems. When a woman's core vital energies are balanced, the result is healthier monthly cycles and fertility, safer pregnancy and birth, successful breastfeeding, improved moods and effective weight management. It helps us overcome challenges of menopause and aging such as hot flashes, bone loss, decreased libido, fatigue and other complaints.

Before and after surgery, EEM sessions can help people relax, withstand the stress of surgery, and experience relief or even elimination of pain and faster wound healing. EEM can enhance results of therapies prescribed by medical practitioners, and reduce unpleasant side effects of medications. And it can facilitate a graceful transition in the dying process, while providing support for caregivers and families as well.

Individual results vary depending upon how long one's system is out of balance. EEM is self-empowering, can be learned by almost anyone, and complements all healthcare modalities; however, people with chronic or multiple imbalances benefit highly by working under the guidance of a trained practitioner. EEM practitioners invite collaboration with MDs and other practitioners to provide an integrated approach to care, but they do not diagnose, treat disease or prescribe. EEM is not considered a substitute for care by a licensed primary care practitioner/physician or mental health practitioner.

Healing is a deeply personal experience that provides great opportunity for insight and growth physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, even in the face of crisis. For some it may mean a full recovery from an illness; for others, an improvement in the quality of life; and for others, acceptance and letting go in the dying process.

No one is ever to blame for their illness or a failure if they don't experience a cure. Blame and self-judgment only create stress, which negates healing.

Embarking upon a healing journey is an act of self-care and self-love. Openness to healing for the highest good, trust in the process, and an attitude of gratitude all serve to create flow and joy in the process. EEM offers loving support and acceptance in a safe and sacred atmosphere to help us have the best healing experience possible.

In predicting the future of Energy Medicine, best-selling author Caroline Myss states, "The contribution Donna Eden has made with Energy Medicine will stand as one of the backbone studies as we lay a sound foundation for the field of holistic medicine."

Christiane Northrup, MD, a women's health and wellness authority and noted author, describes Donna Eden as "one of the most joyous and effective pioneers in the rapidly expanding and vitally important frontier called Energy Medicine."
