Abner intends to spend his remaining days on the farm, which his son, Paul, leased to Lonzo Choat, a no-account local. Abner takes up residence in a sharecropper shack on the property, and knowing that Lonzo hates barking dogs, he befriends and takes in a noisy dog he names Nipper. Some of the film's deepest moments are the quiet conversations between Abner and Thurl Chessor (Barry Corbin), his sedentary, ailing next-door neighbor who is simply biding his time.
