Grant County Arts Scene


Western Bank in Silver City will host "The Heart Gallery," a special show featuring portraits of children in the state of New Mexico that are available for adoption. The exhibit, held in conjunction with the Children Youth and Families Department (CYFD) program, will run April 10-25, with a reception April 23, 5-7 p.m. A Heart Gallery program coordinator will give a presentation and answer questions at the reception. 330 W. The Mimbres Region Arts Council is sponsoring a workshop with Jan Gunlock, "Drawing Nature with Pen, Pencil & Paint," April 11 and 12, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Leyba & Ingalls Arts Studio, 315 N. Bullard. Call for artists! The Grant County Art Guild invites artists who are residents of the state of New Mexico to enter the 23rd Annual Purchase Prize Award Exhibit. Realistic paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel are eligible for awards totaling $2,400. Entries due August 1, 2008. The San Vicente Artists of Silver City also are calling for artists. The group will hold their second annual Judged Student Art Show, April 25-26 at the Silco Theater, 311 N. Bullard St., with an opening reception for the artists April 25, 5-8 p.m. The show is open to all junior high and high school art students. Students can contact their school's art teachers or Lee McCune, chairperson for the show, at 538-0465. Also, the group's new exhibit in the Teleperformance lobby, Hwy. 180 E. (next to Ace Hardware), will be installed May 1.

Las Cruces and Mesilla Arts Scene


The Tombaugh Gallery will present nonobjective art by Joan Talty and Ruth Abrams Drayer through May 2, with an artists' reception April 6, 12-2 p.m., with an artists' talk at 1:15. Talty composes her images like music, working with triads and the circle of fifths. New to the Tombaugh show will be several small format marker drawings as well as her signature large acrylics. Drayer, a painter, writer and intuitive numerologist, has an eclectic, spiritual approach to life and a strong love of color and design. After working in various arts related fields, traveling widely and living in India, Drayer began painting the luminous, mystical, colorful abstract paintings that are now known as "Dreamscapes." 2000 S. Tomi LaPierre, an accomplished sculptor and artist with 25 years of technical and drafting experience, will delve into the art of forensic facial reconstruction at the Las Cruces Arts Association meeting, April 20, 1:30 p.m. in the Dresp Room of the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library.

The Las Cruces Arts Association hosts "Fantasy: The Sublime Escape," an exhibit of works by Toni Graywolf and Carol Kennedy at the Terrace Gallery in the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, in April. A reception for the artists will be held April 4, 4-4:45 p.m. during the Downtown Ramble. 200 E. Picacho.

The Unsettled Gallery & Studio will host "Print It," an exhibit featuring the work of local and regional printmakers and photographers including Ann Adams, Sylvia Bowers, Richard Krieger, Miriam Lozada-Jarvis, JD Jarvis, Lois Smith, Ouida Touchon and Laurel Weathersbee. There will be an artists' reception April 11, 5 p.m. The gallery also will host a series of hands-on art workshops in April. 905 N. Mesquite, 635-2285.

Laughing at the Sun gallery's featured artist for April will be Gabriel Perez, with an opening reception for the artist April 5, 5-7 p.m. 1910 Calle De Parian, Mesilla. 523-1890.

The New Mexico Watercolor Society South_ern Chapter's Spring Show will be on exhibit at the Branigan Cultural Center, April 4-26, with an opening reception April 4, 5-7 p.m. The Branigan will also exhibit over 40 works of art by members of the Black Range Artists, April 4-26, 2008. Glenn Cutter Jewelers and Gallery is exhibiting "Canyons, Vistas and the Mesilla Valley," works by well-known Las Cruces watercolorist Robert Highsmith, February's Desert Exposure cover artist.
