Grant County Arts Scene

Silver City's newest gallery, Yello on Yankie, will have its grand opening on April 14. Opening day will include a reception for artist Susan Dell Szajer, 1:30-3:30 p.m. The gallery features contemporary fiber art and is located at 108 W. Yankie, 534-4968. Hours will be Weds.-Sat., 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Mary A. Gravelle will present "Wisdom Painting at Gallery 400," a workshop in painting for self-discovery, April 8, 1-4 p.m., at Gallery 400 in Silver City. Gravelle promotes this method of creating art as a healthy form of creative expression, especially for mid-lifers who have worked to support their families without much concern for their own needs and wants. Participants will be encouraged to get in touch with their intuition and find healthy release in painting.

Gravelle will offer Wisdom Painting workshops on the second Sunday of the month at the gallery. She has led creativity workshops for 15 years, from New York to California. "Seeing Better," an exhibit of the photographic works of Rod Rees, will be on display at The StudioSpace and Gallery in Silver City through April 21, with a closing reception for the artist April 21, 6-8 p.m. 109 Bullard St., 534-9291.

The Mimbres Region Arts Council will show the photography of James Hemphill at the Arts Council/Wells Fargo Gallery April 13-June 9, with an opening reception for the artist April 13, 5-6:30 p.m. 1201 Pope St., Silver City, 538-2505.

Dos Baristas Coffee Gallery in Silver City will show "Walking the Dog on Boston Hill: Landscape Caricatures by Hiram Lewis," April 1-May 15. 112 W. Yankie Street.

Works by Kourosh Amini will be on view at the Twisted Vine, with an opening reception April 1, 4-6 p.m. 108 E. Broadway, 388-2828.

New works by Paula Livingston and James Otey will be featured at the Reese-Benton Gallery in Silver City, with an opening reception April 14, 3-5 p.m. 211-D N. Texas St., 590-2200.

Fused glass totems by John Reeves are new at Lois Duffy Art, 211-C N. Texas in Silver City, 313-9631.

The Common Thread fiber-arts gallery will have a raffle drawing on April 28 for five handmade fiber-art pieces. 107 Broadway, Silver City, 538-5733.

JW Art Gallery in Hurley will host the traveling oral history exhibit, "Barelas a través de los años (Barelas across the years): A Pictorial History of a Community," April 12-July 12, with an opening reception April 12, 5-8 p.m. There will be music, refreshments and guest speakers at the opening. The exhibit includes a large display of pictorial history and covers 125 years of documented history of the railroad community in Albuquerque. Volunteers are needed to serve as docents during the 90-day exhibit, and will be trained by Casa de la Cultura en Santa Clara. Info on being a docent or on the organization, 538-6526. Luna County Art Happenings

Art on the Western Edge announces its art classes now forming. Diana LeMarbe will teach inexpensive photo mounting April 7. Cost is $15 plus materials. Info and pre-registration: 642-3641. Las Cruces and Mesilla Arts Scene

The Las Cruces All-City High School Seniors will show their work at the Las Cruces Museum of Art April 20-28, with an opening reception and awards presentation for the artists April 20, 5-7 p.m. Artistic media include ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, drawing and painting, photography and mixed media. The reception will be catered by senior students in high school culinary arts programs who also will receive awards for their presentations. 491 N. "Desert in Silk" opens at the Patio Art Gallery in Las Cruces with a reception April 7, 1-4 p.m., featuring paintings on silk by Judy Licht. University and El Paseo, Las Cruces, 541-7401.

The Rio Grande Theatre and Galleries will host "Windows, Doors and Gates," works by The Essentialist, a group of watercolorists, April 6-27, with an opening reception for the artists April 6, 5-7 p.m. 211 N. Downtown Mall, Las Cruces.

The Main Street Gallery in Las Cruces will celebrate the completion of its interior and exterior renovation with a grand reopening April 6, 5-7 p.m., during the Downtown Ramble, opening its exhibit by a new collaborative of local artists, Penny Duncklee, Daphne Wirthlin, Ruth Drayer, Mark Ploss and Lynn Unangst. 311 N. "Explorations of an Eclectic Artist", a solo exhibition of colorful acrylic paintings by Las Cruces artist C.C. Sierra County Arts Scene
