Dias de los Muertos—Through Nov. 2. A holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico, The Day of the Dead is a traditional celebration of deceased loved ones who are reunited with their families on these days. In honoring their dead relatives, happy spirits provide protection, good luck and wisdom to their families. Various locations downtown Silver City.

Las Cruces/Mesilla

House of Sand—Through Nov. 2. A hypnotic tale of two women in the dunes, the film charts the 59-year ordeal of Maria (Fernanda Montenegro) and daughter Aurea (Fernanda Torres) in Brazil's Maranhao desert. Initially brought to their desolate home in 1910 by Aurea's husband, the pair is soon abandoned. Aided by a runaway slave (Sue Jorge), the two struggle to survive their difficult, solitary existence. The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail—Through Nov. 4. This play was a clear protest against the Vietnam War, using a related incident from America's history. In 1846, writer Henry David Thoreau spent a night in jail for not paying his taxes. Thoreau refused to pay money that would support the Mexican-American War that was then underway. Donations benefit the Herb McGrath Fund, which offers scholarships to WNMU students. Donations of pet food will also be accepted and donated to the animal shelter. 7:30 p.m., WNMU Webb Theater, 538-6502.
