Edmond—Through Oct. 5. Edmond, a middle-aged white executive (William H. Macy), wanders one night into a hell of crime and punishment in search of his manhood, love and some cheap oral sex. He finds them all, though not in the ways he expected. After he leaves his office, he talks to a tarot card reader who sees catastrophe ahead. Soon, he begins trying to escape his life, telling his wife he's leaving and then heading for a bar where a basketball fan (Joe Mantegna) sends Edmond off to a local bar/sex club. When a pretty, amiable B-girl (Denise Richards) tells him her fee, he becomes incensed. Soon he's gotten himself tossed out, the start of a long round of explosive confrontations with hookers, hotel clerks, three-card-monte grifters, pawnshop guys and pimps. Quinceanera—Through Oct. 12. Revolving around the 15th birthday ceremony that marks a girl's passage to womanhood, the film's heart is the troubled coming of age of Magdalena (Emily Rios). It opens with a gorgeous widescreen splash of color and music as her cousin Eileen celebrates her quinceanera. As Magdalena prepares for her own party, she agrees to accommodate the budget concerns of her mother. She pleads, however, for the indispensable luxury of a Hummer limo for the day, but her strict preacher father refuses. When Magdalena gets pregnant by her boyfriend Herman, her family life falls apart, prompting her to run away and live with kindly old great-uncle Tio Tomas (Chalo Gonzalez). Magdalena becomes part of a family of exiles with her tough cousin Carlos, thrown out of his house when his father discovered he was cruising gay Web sites.
