Aviation Day Set to Soar Oct. 14

Ever wonder what it's like to climb into a small airplane, taxi down the runway and then lift off to soar through the sky? Wonder no more. The Grant County Pilots Association is hosting Aviation Day on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Grant County Airport from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. You're invited to join in the fun in the air as well as on land.

Airplane rides, weather permitting, will offer a spectacular bird's eye view of Silver City. Ticket sales for morning flights go on sale at 8 a.m., $20 per person, no age limit. Arrive early to secure your seat, as tickets are limited.

Prefer to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground? There will be plenty to see and do: meet local pilots, view many types and sizes of aircraft on display, take a tour of the Gila National Forest Aerial Base, have your picture taken with Smokey Bear. Food and refreshments will be available throughout the day. Parking, admission and tours are free.

The nonprofit Grant County Pilots Association has been promoting general aviation and education for more than three decades. With 67 pilots and non-pilots, the association is currently at an all-time high in registered membership. Recently the group has added a Web site and begun monthly membership meetings promoting flight education and safety. Aviation courses at WNMU in 2007 are in the planning stages.
