A Gem of a Weekend
The Rolling Stones Gem and Mineral Show has been a Labor Day Weekend event in Grant County for many years, drawing thousands of visitors. This year's 23rd Annual Gem and Mineral Show will be held Saturday through Monday, Sept. 2-4, at the Silver City Recreation Center on Gold Street in Silver City. The doors will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. There is no charge for admission to the show.
This year 40 vendors from the Southwestern United States and Mexico will bring their museum-quality mineral specimens, jewelry artwork crafted from rocks and gems, and equipment and supplies for lapidary work. In addition, the Rolling Stones will conduct a silent auction, every 30 minutes throughout the show, and the Wheel of Fortune, which features fossil and mineral specimens. Both are long-standing traditions at the show.
The 2006 show is dedicated to the memory of Jim Lett, who was show chairman for many years. He died in December 2005.
This year's show also includes daily field trips to local spots of geologic interest. Field trips will leave from the front of the Recreation Center at 8 a.m. Participants should be prepared with plenty of water, good hiking shoes, hats and lunch.
Speaking of food, the Silver City Lions Club will provide food service at the show, so you can take a break and have lunch without leaving the show.
