312th Army Band—53 musicians who are all members of the US Army Reserve. Don't Come Knocking—Through Aug. 3. A tale of an aging movie star, Howard, who bolts from the set of his latest Western after binging on drugs, alcohol and hookers. He ditches his shoes, shirt, horse and credit cards, and heads off to see his mom, who tells him he fathered a son 20 years ago while shooting a film in Butte, Mont. Howard resents the information at first, but with no other alternative than to return to his dead-end life, he heads off to Montana to see the woman he left behind and connect with his past. Photo Art on Silk—Through Aug. 13. Work by Nadia Zucker. Images taken with a Nikon digital camera, artistically enhanced using Adobe Photoshop, and printed on silk fabric. Billy Goat Ballad—For ages 9 and up, by Loren Kahn Puppet and Object Theater. Cornebique, a billy goat and big fan of the blues, hits the road to forget an unrequited love. He finds himself unexpectedly in charge of a tiny dormouse, an animal of which he has never heard. Flesh, Weasel, special agent, is on their trail. He means to capture this last remaining male dormouse and reunite him with the sole remaining female, in order to create the world's biggest corporate food supply for—weasels! Elevator to the Gallows—Through Aug. 10. Pure pulp fiction about a murder plan that goes bad, but what really counts is the fatalistic atmosphere. A disaffected veteran sets out to kill his boss, an arms dealer, and winds up missing a rendezvous with his girlfriend, who thinks she's been betrayed. Meanwhile, a juvenile delinquent and his girlfriend steal the veteran's car and wind up in a bloody scrape with two foreign tourists. The heart of the picture is her odyssey, much of it at night and accompanied by poetic internal monologues, as she visits bars and cafes in search of her missing lover. The black-and-white cinematography of Henri Decae gives the movie the clarity of a dream and offers a vision of the City of Light as melancholy and haunted. French with English subtitles.
