Car Show Revs Up August 19

What do numerous US Forest Service employees, a retired Silver City fire chief, a volunteer Santa Claus, a former security guard, engineers, mine employees, business owners and a variety of other locals have in common? The answer is a passion for classic cars and camaraderie in the Copper Country Cruizers car club. Most are also heavily involved in the upcoming Run to Copper Country Car Show that the club puts on every year.

In 1992 a handful of local classic-car enthusiasts formed the Copper Country Cruizers and hosted the first annual Run to Copper Country Car Show. This year they will host their 15th annual show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, at Old James Stadium on the Western New Mexico University campus in Silver City.

The shows have attracted as many as 180 entries from around the Southwest and drawn many more spectators. It is a popular display of classic cars and trucks, dating from 1973 back to the early 1900s. The nonprofit club uses revenues from the show to support a scholarship fund and make donations to several charities.

Registration for the car show will take place at the host motel, the Holiday Inn Express, on Friday, August 18, from 2-8 p.m., and continue on Saturday morning at the stadium on campus. Registration for participants is $35 per car, which includes dash plaque, T-shirt and goodie bag.

More information about the Run to Copper Country 15th Annual car Show is available by calling Cruz Bustillos at 388-3519 or Karlene Colgan at 388-3468. Information about the show is also available at www.coppercountrycruizers.com.

The show is free to spectators. In addition to the array of classic cars, there will be booths, refreshments, drawings, and oldies music from the 1950s and 1960s.

So take a step back in time and "stroll on down" to the car show. Who knows? You might see a "Hot Rod Lincoln" or a "Little Deuce Coup," or hear some car owner brag, "She's Real Fine My 409."
