Pike Bishop (William Holden) is the leader of a band of outlaws out of step with the times. They know that their way of life has become an anachronism, but decide to do one last robbery before calling it quits. Teaming with a Mexican revolutionary, the outlaws agree to steal a shipment of guns from the US Army. Pursued by a former colleague (Robert Ryan), who is leading a band of slovenly bounty hunters, and also by the army, the gang is soon on the run.
