Hopping Mad About Art
Las Cruces 12th annual ArtsHop on Sept. 9 benefits young artists.
When the calendar page turns to September, art enthusiasts begin thinking ArtsHop, an evening of gallery-hopping—with food—every year on the first Friday after Labor Day. The 12th annual ArtsHop will be Sept. 9, 5-9 p.m. Besides exposing gallery-goers to the latest in local art, the event benefits young art students, 40 middle-schoolers enrolled in the Dona Ana Arts Council's (DAAC) summer Career Art Path (CAPS) program. The Branigan Cultural Center and the Las Cruces Museum of Fine Art will display artwork from CAPS students from 4-6 p.m.
For the DAAC's 12th annual ArtsHop, 10 galleries will be participating and many local restaurants and caterers will be providing light hors d'oeuvres. All participating galleries will provide $100 gift certificates as a door prize. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and are available at all the galleries as well as the arts council offices located in the historic Rio Grande Theatre at 211 N. Downtown Mall, 523-6403.
The inspiration for ArtsHop came from Sally Cutter of the Glenn Cutter Gallery, when she and her husband Glenn visited Santa Fe's art crawl. "Our art in Las Cruces has always had the warm flavor of the Southwest, and sometimes back then, people were not really aware of it," she recalls. "Having an event where art, arts education and food joined together was something we in Las Cruces could do very well."
From that first year when four galleries participated, ArtsHop has grown to include galleries throughout Las Cruces and Old Mesilla. This year's participants will be:
