Table Talk

The restaurant scene giveth and taketh away when it comes to places to have breakfast in Silver City: Caballeros, the popular Mexican restaurant on Hwy. 180 east, is now serving breakfast. But Olde World Bakery, which served breakfast as well as lunch, has shut its doors. Don't expect the Bakery's prime location at the corner of Bullard and Broadway to stay empty long. . . . Way Out West, on the edge of Mesilla, has closed after nearly a decade. We'll miss sipping wine margaritas on its lovely patio, and its green-chile chicken lasagna. . . . New on the Las Cruces dining menu is the Pepper Mill, at 141 Roadrunner, suite 115, 522-7300. It's open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. . . . Cafe Rush on University Avenue in Las Cruces is no more. . . . See if you can follow this restaurant musical chairs: Sweet Indulgence has moved to 523 E. Idaho in Las Cruces, where it hopes to reopen any day now as Si Italian Bistro. Owner Jeremy Hixon promises a greatly expanded menu, including pizzas from a wood-fired oven. Call 523-1572 to check whether the bistro's in business yet. Meanwhile, Sweet Indulgence's former location is now Cafe Casablanca, which is already open and serving Middle Eastern food at 1702 El Paseo (541-1099) from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. . . . Finally, food lovers who like to cook their own gourmet meals are rejoicing that the eagerly awaited Toucan Market is now open in Pan Am Plaza, 1701 E. University Ave. The wine and cheese selections will remind you of Trader Joe's in Tucson. Plus you'll find aged beef (cut to order), a wide selection of seafood and plenty of natural, organic and health foods. Check out the extensive Web site at www.toucanmarket.com or call 521-3003 for more information. Hours are daily except Sundays, 7:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.; opening Sundays at 9:30 a.m. (Don't forget to tell Toucan Market that Desert Exposure sent you!)
