Rainbow Event—For Flag Day, former Silver City resident Fred Stern will work with the Silver City Fire Department to create a 500-foot man-made rainbow over the Big Ditch on Broadway. "People attending the event are requested to bring the sun with them to ensure the rainbow will appear." The rainbow will be formed when water pumped into the air by the fire department refracts the sun's rays. Stern has created more than 40 rainbows as large as 2,000 feet across for major cities in the US, South America, the Middle East and Europe. This is the 10th anniversary of the first rainbow Stern created in Silver City in 1995. 4:30 p.m. www.rainbowmaker.us.

Paper Hearts—This 1993 film was written, directed and filmed in Hillsboro, NM, by Hillsboro resident Rod McCall. This slice-of-life melodrama is about a woman in a midlife crisis who is struggling to preserve her home and family. Sally Kirkland stars as Jenny, who must deal with a serious problem involving her wayward husband Henry (James Brolin) as she prepares for the wedding of her youngest daughter, Kat (Renee Estevez). Kris Kristofferson co-stars as Kirkland's friend. The film premiered at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival, and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.
