Shoot-Out—Another rare made-in-New Mexico film, this 1971 Western Gregory Peck as a bank robber recently released from prison, seeking revenge on his double-crossing partner, played by James Gregory. A plot twist gives Peck another "partner," a precocious eight-year-old girl who may or may not be his daughter. Sideways—This film hit the independent film scene like gangbusters. It won one Oscar (Best Adapted Screenplay), two Golden Globes (Best Motion Picture/Best Screenplay) and six Spirit Awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay. It's a comedy with heart and a willingness to touch upon issues like fidelity, integrity and honesty. Jack (Thomas Haden Church) is about to be married. His friend Miles (Paul Giamatti) takes him on a trip through California wine country. Both are middle-aged white guys, neither one much of a success in their respective fields.
