The Vanishing American--This 1925 silent film was one of the first films to ever use American Indians in co-starring roles and as extras. The presentation will include live music, composed and performed by Las Cruces musician Charles Blanchard. The film is a look at American Indians from their first appearance on this continent (basket weavers, slab builders, cliff dwellers, etc.) through the then-present day era just after World War I. Richard Dix is Nophaie, a tribal leader, and Lois Wilson is the schoolmarm. Their inter-racial love is impeccably handled. Noah Beery lends his charming menace as the villain. Much of the film was shot in Utah's Monument Valley. 1:30 p.m. Admission (includes museum) adults $3, seniors $2, ages 6 to 17 $1. Moolaadé--Considered to be the father of postcolonial African cinema, Ousmane Sembene has often explored the hardships facing African women in his films. Four young girls appear at Collé's doorstep, having fled a purification ceremony that includes female circumcision, still a common practice in Africa. Collé invokes a protective spirit (moolaadé) to protect the girls. As long as it is in effect , no one can remove the girls from her household. Her action casts Collé as a subversive, threatening the social order of her village. While the film is clearly a polemic against the practice, Sembene imbues it with a dramatic richness by detailing the daily life of the village's women. Rather than have you pity their plight, the film revels in their courage and heroism. Can they change their village? 4 p.m. Real West Cinema II, 11585 Hwy 180 E., Silver City.
