Las Cruces/Mesilla

Tarnation--Through Jan. 6. In his spellbinding debut, Jonathon Caouette has re-imagined what a documentary could be. Since age 11, he has documented his life, weaving together an almost psychedelic array of snapshots, Super-8 home movies, answering machine messages, video diaries, early short films, and bits of pop culture into a story of his life. In so doing, he has created an epic portrait of an American family with a legacy of mental illness, torn apart by dysfunction but reunited by the power of love. Unrated. Nightly at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. Tickets $6, members $4, students and seniors $5. Fountain Theater, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe, 524-8287, www.fountaintheatre.org.

Being Julia--Through Jan. 13. Based on W. Somerset Maugham's 1937 novel Theatre, this costume comedy-drama is about the joys and sorrows of the art of acting. It explores the difference between fantasy and reality, as the world of theater becomes a metaphor for our everyday life roles. It features Annette Bening as a London theater actress in her 40s who is having a breakdown--now too old for ingenue roles--but who ultimately transcends her limits, with aid from her manager/husband, portrayed by Jeremy Irons. Directed by Istvan Szabo. Rated R. Nightly at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. Tickets $6, members $4, students and seniors $5. Fountain Theater, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe, 524-8287, www.fountaintheatre.org.
